one of my most favorite songs from mitski is Old Friend. idk why but it reminds me so much of Adele. or maybe im thinking of a different artist cause i havent listened to adele at all ever since my childhood. the way she sings "ill take coffee and talk about nothing" is really giving adele (if adele is the right artist im thinking of)

carry me out, at least in my interpretation, follows a narrator who is still in mourning over someone they lost. whether this be literal or metaphorical is left intentionally vague. The narrator sits on the rooftop, letting down their hair, which is most often done as an act of relaxation, as it “unleashes the night”; this likely points to the narrator watching the sun set as their hair is behind them, so the imagery is that their dark hair is engulfed in the darkness behind them of the night. The mention of “the scent of flowers still in bloom from morning showers” likely is driven by ‘still’ as in something that realistically should be gone, but lingers like the feelings left behind from loss. the narrator experiencing all of these things only intensifying their feelings of isolation. then saying this persons name from the rooftop as it is likely the closest to “the stars” they can get. The second verse is the narrator driving recklessly. They’re out on the road at night. describing headlights as ‘spirits’ and the road as ‘the styx’. This likely infers that the reckless behavior during driving will kill the narrator. The styx is the river that not only separates the mortal world from the underworld, but it is also the river all spirits must cross to reach the afterlife. so by saying “the headlight spirits lead me down the styx” the narrator is saying that those headlights are leading them towards the path to death or of self destruction. lastly the chorus is a resounding and repeating plea to “carry me out” which holds a double meaning. on one end it could be “carry me out of here” as in take me with you away from this place, as the narrator feels as though they are unable to do so themself. alternatively, it could be pleading for someone to acknowledge and end their suffering, the method by which it is done being unknown. carry me out is lyrically one of mitski’s best songs, it has some of her most succinct imagery and not only that, but also combines beautiful vocals and instrumentals.

She hasn't made a bad album.... I like Fetch the Bolt Cutters best, because she's at her best when she just doesn't GAF about being commercial. Idler Wheel is maybe my second favorite, for much the same reason. The way she turns a phrase, often with a metaphor that works in a couple of different ways, is amazing... She is fearlessly personal and FIERCELY vulnerable and her expressive voice matches her words.

i like to believe that 'once more to see you' is a wlw song. the secrecy of the intimacy is in fear of being judged by societies ideals. there has also been a couple instances where mitski hints that she has loved a woman or women before. the pining of living a life thats accepted just as much as a straight relationship kills me each time i listen to the song.

I love coming back to your channel and watching these videos! You connect the dots so well! I just hope you’re doing alright! Give yourself time to rest and treat yourself when you can! If you wanted to react to full albums and just post an unedited video, I’d still watch it haha!! But of course, if you’re just not in that place right now, we understand. Wishing you the best!!! ❤ P.s. I really think you’d love: The Albatross, How Did It End?, The Prophecy, and Peter! “The Anthology” has so so so much beautiful poetry, so even if you don’t do a full react, I really think you’d like it!

Even 15 days later, I still feel like there's so much to digest and interpret and understand... TTPD was not an album that I loved on the first listen... Differently than Midnights, evermore, and reputation, this was an album where I spent a good thirty minutes going: "What the heck is going on here? What am I listening to? What is she trying to tell?" - However, from the second listen onwards it started growing and I think there hasn't been a day I haven't listened to the full album at least once. I think that the similarities to other songs: mastermind, begin again, bejeweled, mirrorball, call it what you want, death by a thousand cuts, etc. Can be viewed as either juxtaposing what the previous song said, or she's explaining further what she meant in those songs or she's finally getting closure of that longing she sang about. I believe TTPD is the ending of an era (and all of the previous ones too). Going further, we probably won't see glimpses of the "old Taylor". She's moving on (and I am here for it). I also enjoyed the fact that the "muse" of some songs is not easily identifiable. Some songs tell us a story of the two of them at the same time. In "but daddy I love him", I think she's singing about three different people throughout the song - when she says 'even my daddy just loves him', it makes no sense she's talking about the same man she did at the beginning of the song. To be honest, most of the time I do forget the guy between the actor and Travis. I wasn't expecting him to be mentioned at all, and I try my hardest to NOT revolve Taylor's creativity and art around the men in her life, so I focus on the feelings and emotions she conveyed in the songs. At the end of the day both of them have hurt her immensely the only difference being the time they got to do it. My friends and I also thought that the two starting songs "Fortnight" and "TTPD" weren't connected to the remainder of the album. So while conversing the night away we came up with a hypothesis: the album's concept is a poetry book, so the two opening songs are the prologue of the narrative: the love story ending in TTPD and she remembering how it happened in Fortnight. Those two encouraged her to write the 14 other poems to tell us about the fortnight (the period of time) when it unravelled. Then in the Anthology, she brings another fortnight of stories based on her own suspicions and suppositions to themes of her past (including the romantic relationships). Whilst in the first album she tells us what happened on the outside (even though she pretty much shows what she was feeling), the second album shows us what was going on inside her head and heart. That is backed up by TN and TS posts asking us to listen to the 5 stages playlists so we could review/remember the past and when Tay said 'only a fortnight til TTPD' asking us to focus on the present/future. So, I'd advise everyone to listen at least once like this: Fortnight and TTPD. Then My boy only breaks his favorite toys followed by the black dog; down bad and imgonnagetyouback and so on. (Beware though, cause the combo: loml, the prophecy, I can do it with a broken heart and Cassandra is BRUTAL). The Manuscript is the epilogue... wrapping up this poetry book she wrote. Closing the chapter of her life and moving on. TTPD is a DENSE album. You finish it tired. She makes us feel everything she felt during those times. And I think this is what she meant, give us a glimpse of how she felt whilst she was conquering the world, hitting her marks with her broken heart.
